Where do the Valhalla statistics come from?

Many folks think the stats just "sort of happen" or that there's some sort of automatic system in place which records each and every play, then at the push of a button, the numbers appear in nicely formatted text.

This couldn't be further from the truth.

Enter Gene Yale. Mr. Yale is the Varsity statistician. He's the gentleman you see moving back and forth along the sideline at every game, carrying an oversized clipboard and making notes about each play. What you may not know is that Gene's wife Linda is sitting in the stands, diligently filming each game so that Gene has a means to review plays he might not have been able to catch in real time.

Some interesting facts about Gene Yale

Gene and Linda have been generating stats for VHS Varsity Football since the 2000 season. They replaced Joan Reid, the wife of former Valhalla Athletic Director Randy Reid, when she decided to retire. Prior to becoming involved with the football team, Gene maintained the stats for Valhalla Softball and Girls Basketball during the time his daughter Suzanne played on those teams (1997-2000). As Gene tells it, then-football coach Jason Ehlen asked him to take over varsity football stats to help keep Gene out of trouble on Friday nights.

The rest, as they say, is history.

A typical "Football Friday" for Gene and Linda includes walking the sidelines during the game, charting every play; calling in the score with limited stats to the Union Tribune for Saturday's newspapers; preparing a rough draft of the game for EastCountySports.Com; compiling the game's stats, entering them into his stats program and getting them ready for delivery to Coach Sutton Saturday morning at the coaches' meeting. Gene usually reviews the film for defensive stats on Saturday morning. And keep in mind, Gene and Linda do this for each and every game: rain or shine, home or away.

Gene and Linda's son James graduated from Valhalla in 2002. Gene is a fourth-generation San Diegan and a third-generation lawyer: Linda teaches English at an inner-city middle school in San Diego.

Gene has also spent countless hours updating Valhalla's football records - not a task for the feint of heart!

So the next time you're at a Varsity game, look for the "guy with the giant clipboard." If you get a chance, introduce yourself: Gene is a very interesting guy!
